SQL Server 2008 Installation

Today I had the task of installing SQL Server 2008 on some new Windows Server 2008 Boxes. At first things seemed to go fine, installing updates here and there, but when it came to installing SQL Server there seemed to be a problem:

System Configuration Checker had this error:

Windows PowerShell is not installed. To continue, please install Windows PowerShell

Windows Server 2008 is supposed to come with PowerShell, why would this server not have it? It turns out that Windows Server 2008 has PowerShell built-in, but it's not installed yet (at least not for me).

This is what i had to do to get it working:

%windir%\system32\servermanagercmd.exe -install powershell

The next snag was caused by us not having a good enough password set, fixed by using a better password.

Here is the next error:

The specified sa password does not meet strong password requirements. For more information about strong password requirements, see "Database Engine Configuration - Account Provisioning" in Setup Help or in SQL Server 2008 Books Online.

After these small issues installation went fine and everything is now working.

JustHost Support

Last night there were issues with my hosting provider so i emailed in a support request to find out more information:

support,

I'm having problems getting to my site and the control panel.  Are
there issues with the server right now?

site: http://www.antiyes.com/

John Boker

After a little while with no response I contacted them through the "Live Chat" feature on their website:

info: You are now chatting with 'Paul'
Paul: Welcome to Live Chat support, how may I help you?
John Boker: Hi Pau
John Boker: l
John Boker: it seems that the server my site is on is down
Paul: Hello John
John Boker: do you have any ideas when it'll be back up?
Paul: Is this regarding your website antiyes.com ?
John Boker: yes
John Boker: it's on web16
John Boker: http://status.justhost.com/web16 says the server is down
John Boker: it's been down for over half an hour now
Paul: Yes, We are presently facing a little trouble with the server on which your site is hosted. I assure you that our admins are on this, and it will be resolved shortly.
John Boker: no ideas on how long though?
Paul: I am sorry but there is no exact Time Frame
John Boker: is the 99.9% uptime guarantee per month ?
Paul: I am sorry but our Senior admins are working on this and the issue might be resolved soon
John Boker: this is from justhost.com " If Just Host fails to provide the promised 99.9% uptime, we will credit your account with a month's hosting costs, as we guarantee an impressive minimum network uptime of 99.9%."

Just after this conversation (40 minutes downtime) the server came back up and everything was fine, so i was suprised to get another email:

Hi  John,

I have jus reset your password back to default.

Your cPanel access details:

cPanel URL: http://cpanel.antiyes.com

cPanel URL: http://antiyes.com/cpanel

cPanel Username: xxxxxxxxx
cPanel Password: xxxxxxxxx

note:
Dont type username and password manually, just copy and paste them.

Sorry, I don't see any problem with your website.
As I see it works fine.
Please check it again.

Please let me know if there is anything else I can help you with.
Thank you.

Kind regards,

Apparently the problems i was having weren't caused by the server being down, it was that I don't know how to log in to my control panel.

This prompted another email by me to let them know it was a server problem:

The problem wasn't my password, the problem was web16 was down for about 40 minutes last night.

Sent from my iPod

And again there's some failure in communication:

Hi  John,

Sorry, I don't see any problems with your account or our server.
The server has not been turned off or rebooted today.
If we had some problems we would have received a lot of complaints but yours is the only one.

This is where I'm at, I guess I'll just let it go.
