Vanilla ChromeOS
Following the simple steps on the Chromium OS Developer Guide I built a Chromium image and installed it in VMware Player in Ubuntu.
My initial thoughts on this was it was easy to do but it runs really slowly in VMware Player. Maybe it would run faster on real hardware, that's the next thing to try. Below are a few screenshots of Chromium in action.
Ubuntu 9.04 & Microsoft Notebook Mouse 5000
Ubuntu 9.04 & Microsoft Notebook Mouse 5000 Thursday, June 04, 2009 11:53:24 PM A while ago I picked up a Microsoft Notebook Mouse 5000. Finally decided to use it on my laptop. I figured that having a bluetooth mouse would mean that I wouldn't have a USB receiver hanging off my laptop all the time. Plus, I thought it would be nice to use Blue Proximity. Now, the hiccup came when setting up the new mouse on Ubuntu 9.04 64-bit. It seems that you have to do a little bit extra to get the mouse working. I found the solution on the Ubuntu forums. For my one selfish purposes, I will repeat the instructions here: 1) install the bluez-compat package with terminal sudo apt-get install bluez-compat 2)Pair the mouse with the bluetooth manager. The manager will say that the pairing is "successfull" Although the mouse won't worked... this step has to be done... 3) In the terminal, type : sudo hidd --search You should see something like Searching ... Connecting to device 00:XX:XX:XX:XX:XX (your mouse MAC) Done. Your mouse should be working now.
Open Street Map Year of Edits
An animation showing edits to the OpenStreetMap.org project during 2008. OpenStreetMap is a wiki-style map of the world and this animation displays a white flash each time a way is entered or updated. Some edits are a result of a physical local survey by a contributor with a GPS unit and taking notes, other edits are done remotely using aerial photography or out-of-copyright maps, and some are bulk imports of official data.
OpenStreetMap started in 2004 and the rate of contributions is accelerating with four times as many people contributing to the project in 2008 compared to 2007. During the year, edits were made by some 20,000 individuals and there were bulk imports of data for many places, including the USA, India, Italy and Belarus which are clearly visible in the animation.
